The Harpies – folk songs of the British Isles

Sunday, April 17, 2016 @ 7:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Harpist Frances Thiele has teamed up with the wonderful soprano Savanna Griechen to perform folk songs from the British Isles as The Harpies. Together they perform classically inspired interpretations of traditional music specialising in their own arrangements of English, Irish and Scottish tunes as well as some of their contemporary favourites (with a folksy feel).

Savanna Griechen is a classical singer and actor from Western Australia. She graduated from WAAPA in 2007 and has since lived in London and Italy, touring music theatre shows in the U.K and Theatre in Education in Italy. Whilst living in London she also featured in a short film for Hampton Court Palace. Since returning to Australia and moving to Melbourne, Savanna has sung with Lyric Opera of Melbourne, Melbourne City Opera and XL Arts. In theatre Savanna has played Helena in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, as well as a variety of other roles. This year Savanna has also begun composing her own music and performing regularly as a soloist and with her band the Pender Street Posse in Footscray. She has also had roles in a number of short films with CGU insurance, Swinburne and Melbourne University. She also teaches singing and music and runs two choirs at Braemar College in Woodend.

Frances Thiele is a harp player from the beautiful Macedon Ranges in Victoria. She started learning harp at the age of nine and had a classical training before exploring other genres such as folk and jazz. In recent years she has been developing improvisation techniques, and attempting to find her own voice on the instrument she loves through composition and arranging folk music from the British Isles. Frances has post-graduate tertiary qualifications in history, music and teaching. She has completed many practical examinations with the Australian Music Examination Board and Trinity College, London, in lever and pedal harp. She also has a Fellowship in Musicology from the Australian Society of Musicology and Composition. She launched her debut solo CD ‘Hearts-Ease’ in 2002 and has since appeared as a guest artist on several other recordings. In 2015 Frances published two collections of original music for solo harp ‘Green Wood’ for early harp players and ‘Sentience’ for intermediate harp players. In addition to performing she teaches harp to individual students in her private studio at home and is a VCE classroom music teacher.
