Gen & Jane – Anything But Opera

Anything BUT opera!

A celebration of the smaller achievements of opera’s greatest composers

Jane2

PURCHASE TICKETS ONLINE

Writing an opera is a challenge that looms large over the lives of many composers. Rossini could bash one out in 6 weeks, borrowing from other works and delegating the boring bits to students and friends. Messiaen started composing his only opera in 1979 and finished in 1983, swore it was his last and it had taken a toll on his health. So what are composers writing when they are retired, taking a break, avoiding or making fun of opera? Songs! Songs, for cabaret, saloons and beautiful evenings.

Genevieve Dickson and Jane Matheson are going to plunder the wealth of beautiful songs  NOT written for the grand opera stage, but for a little room like Ruby’s. Come and enjoy a glass of something after work on Wednesday the 20th of April, and the smaller achievements of some of opera’s greatest composers including Mozart, Rossini, Bellini, Donizetti and Britten.

Doors open 6:30 for all 7-10pm shows

SHARON DAVIS – JAZZ VOCALS & PIANO

IS SHE “A PIANO PLAYER WHO SINGS”
OR “A SINGER WHO PLAYS PIANO”?

Sharon Davis Red dress-1

PURCHASE TICKETS ONLINE

She is, undeniably, both. And there’s nothing quite like a single vision of the music,
flowing simultaneously into two hands and one voice.
She traverses the jazz idiom with a light touch, at times sparsely,
at times making the piano roar.

Loyal to the jazz traditions – George Gershwin, Nina Simone, and Cole Porter –
she still walks her own musical path. Getting inside hand-picked jazz tunes
that make her soul tingle or ache, she connects with the audience in unexpected ways.
Authentic and melodious, she knows how to make it swing.

Raised on a 100 year old Steinway, and trained at WA Academy of Performing Arts,
the school of life, and stages in Melbourne, Istanbul and Tokyo,
Sharon encompasses history and modernity in her musical expression.
