SONGS OF THE WORLD ethnojazz

The program refers to the Polish tradition of dialogue between cultures,
and consists of jazz improvisations on songs from the different cultures of the world:
East and West Europe, and the Middle and Far East.
Songs of highly charged energy are separated by moments of meditation.

JAZZ MAZURKAS jazz / classic

Artur Dutkiewicz presents his own contemporary jazz mazurkas from his latest album “Mazurki.”
The mazurka (in Polish, mazurek, pl. mazurki) is a Polish folk dance in triple meter.
Artur’s mazurkas are influenced by F. Chopin, K. Szymanowski, B. Bartok and
Polish folk music, combined with modern jazz improvisation.
The compositions draw on European improvised music stemming from traditions of
classical and contemporary music.

Ken Cowan on piano, has had residencies at the Windsor, The Green Roo and The Rialto as well as many other hotels and restaurants. He regally plays on the Able Tasman and The Oriana.

Mirva Tarvainen is a versatile musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist from Finland.
She’s been greatly influenced by traditional music styles of the Finno-Ugric peoples
(from Northern Europe and parts of Russia), but has also been involved in
classical music, pop, rock, jazz and multidisciplinary projects. Her main instruments
are violin, double bass and voice, and she plays several other instruments,
such as the Finnish bowed lyre, jouhikko. Tarvainen often uses these instruments
to accompany her voice, creating unique resonance and harmonies.

Hailing from Queensland, jazz singer Robyn Brown brings her show ‘Mood Indigo’ to Ruby’s Room.  Exploring songs from some of the early blues singers like Bessie Smith, Ethel Waters and Lil’Green, she takes us on a journey of exploration through the development of jazz and blues, weaving her way through to Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald and sharing the stories of the music. Both entertaining and informative, Robyn’s warmth, grace and natural ability to ‘feel’ and interpret the music has delighted audiences and impressed critics across Australia.

Robyn will me accompanied by Chris Sommervelle on piano.

Robyn studied vocal performance in Sydney, and has since spent the last ten years living on Queensland’s beautiful Sunshine Coast. She honed her craft performing at restaurant and clubs and within a few short years has become an in-demand vocalist, performing in jazz and blues clubs around Australia, and festivals including the Noosa Jazz Festival, Dingo Creek Jazz Festival, Warwick Jumpers and Jazz Festival, Broadbeach Jazz Festival and Hervey Bay Jazz Festival.

In February 2014, the silky-voiced singer released her debut self-titled album of vintage jazz and blues songs, featuring six songs from the jazz and blues greats plus three self-penned originals of equal class. Accompanied by some of Queensland’s finest jazz instrumentalists, Robyn puts her own lush stamp on the music. Her CD has been receiving radio airplay across Queensland and NSW.

Linda and Matt will be playing the entirety of the CD at Ruby’s along with
Cantabile et Presto by George Enseco, the ever-popular Carmen Fantasie by Francois Borne,
as well as music by African-American composer William Grant Still,
Chinese-American composer Chen Yi, and Irish composer Linda Buckley.

The CD title “French Connections” refers to the composers: Camille Saint-Saens was French, Prokofiev was heavily influenced by his time in Paris in the early 1900’s
(there are snippets of his “Romeo and Juliet” music in the sonata; “Romeo and Juliet”
was written for the Ballets Russes, an internationally-known Paris-based dance troupe);
and Yuko Uebayashi is Japanese but has lived and worked in Paris since 1998.

Their debut 2016 CD, “French Connections” features three epic works for flute and piano:

  • Sonata in D Major, opus 94 by Sergei Prokofiev
  • Sonate by Yuko Uebayashi
  • Sonata in D Minor, opus 75 for violin and piano by Camille Saint-Saens.

International soloists Linda Chatterton and Matthew McCright have performed together
as a duo since 2009, including appearances throughout the US and Southeast Asia;
St Martin-in-the-Fields, London; National Concert Hall, Dublin.
